A Pasadena Loft Apartment Kitchen Gets a New Look

Image
Pasadena Loft Apartment Kitchen We recently completed this sophisticated black and brass Pasadena kitchen in one of the hippest luxury loft buildings in town. This wasn’t the typical historical Pasadena residence that we are accustomed to designing.  I had never tackled a loft apartment kitchen and I’m always up for a  design challenge so I was immediately on board. Transforming an ordinary kitchen into a sophisticated modern loft kitchen with a moody attitude was right up my alley! Modern Pasadena Loft Kitchen – The “Before” This was one of the most  satisfying projects to date.  It was  a lot smaller space than we normally take on but it was a challenge, and those who know me, know I thrive when presented with a challenge. The high ceiling and industrial vibe was such a departure from what we normally do.  I was intrigued by the client’s vision that was both glamorous and edgy.  It was an exhilarating feeling to deliver what she envisioned for...

Must-Have Kitchen & Bath Innovations from KBIS 2025

What Are the Most Functional Products for the Kitchen and Bath?

Style gets all the attention, but in kitchen and bath design, function is just as crucial—if not more. In addition to covering the Top Statement Products for the Kitchen (as detailed in my previous post), judging the Best of KBIS at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show this year gave me the opportunity to evaluate the "Most Functional Find" category.

Our judging process was no quick decision. First, our panel of seven reviewed all submissions to select the finalists. Then, at KBIS, we split into teams to evaluate each product up close. Some solutions were so intuitive I wondered why they hadn’t existed sooner, while others showcased cutting-edge engineering in ways I never expected. Let’s dive into the standouts shaping the future of kitchen and bath functionality.

Most Functional Kitchen & Bath Finds – The Winners

Space Step by Blum – Gold Winner

Who hasn’t awkwardly climbed onto a countertop or wobbled on a chair to reach that one high shelf? Blum’s Space Step eliminates the struggle with a sleek built-in step that pulls out from the toe kick—and as a bonus, it hides a clever storage drawer underneath. Adjustable from 6 to 10 inches, it offers easy access to upper cabinets while storing everyday essentials like paper towels, cleaning supplies, or toiletries. Smart, stylish, and an absolute lifesaver.

FurnSpin by Hettich – Silver Winner

Corner cabinets and deep shelves are notorious for swallowing up items into the abyss. Enter FurnSpin by Hettich, a rotating cabinet system that offers full access to stored items—without doors, hinges, or obstructions. Available in multiple sizes and built to hold up to 250 lbs., this design eliminates dead space and transforms how we organize kitchens and bathrooms.

Most Functional Kitchen & Bath Finds – The Finalists

RPush by Richelieu

Ever pressed a push-to-open cabinet only to have it crack open an inch—just enough to be annoying? RPush by Richelieu fixes that frustration with a fully mechanical, electricity-free system that opens doors to a full 90-degree angle. It even features a soft-close function to keep doors from slamming shut. Bonus: it can be retrofitted into existing cabinetry, making it an easy upgrade for modern kitchens and baths.

MagnaBase Deep Drawer Organizer – Century Components

Deep drawers are great in theory, but organizing them? A nightmare. Enter MagnaBase a magnetic peg system that eliminates the restrictions of pre-set holes. Its hidden steel base lets you reposition pegs anywhere, making it ideal for customizing storage in deep kitchen and bathroom drawers It’s so simple yet so genius—I can’t believe it hasn’t been around longer.

COV Illuminated Niche – Robern

Want to make the most of wasted wall space? Robern’s COV Illuminated Niche adds a built-in, backlit shelf that’s perfect for charging stations, open storage, or display space. The soft illumination enhances everything it holds, and with chrome, matte black, and white finishes, it blends seamlessly into any kitchen or bath.

Häfele FREE SLIM

Traditional flip-up doors come with bulky, space-stealing hardware—but not anymore. Häfele Free Slim is an ultra-thin (8mm) flap system that uses spring-assisted movement to glide open and shut without the visual clutter of bulky fittings. Designed for  thin-profile doors, glass cabinets, or seamless modern designs, it also comes in gray, white, and anthracite, with optional  paintable covers for a custom look.

Below, see the difference between the old style flip mechanism on the left as compared to the new Hafele Free Slim on the right.

Hawa Concepta III by Häfele

Imagine a kitchen that disappears when you don’t need it. The Hawa Concepta III makes it possible with  pivot-sliding cabinet doors that tuck away into a  hidden pocket —revealing full storage and workspaces at the tap of a finger. When you’re done, another light tap closes everything away for a clean, minimalist look. It’s an ideal space-saving solution for kitchens, laundry rooms, or multi-use spaces.

These top functional finds from KBIS 2025 prove that smart kitchen and bath solutions don’t just make life easier—they redefine how we use our spaces. Some leverage innovative technology, while others take a brilliantly simple approach to everyday storage challenges.

Which of these kitchen and bath innovations would you want in your home? I know I’m already dreaming up ways to incorporate them!
