A Visit to the Kohler Design Center – Kohler, WI

The Kohler Design Center For three days last week I escaped the Southern California heat and experienced true fall – crisp temperatures ranging from 40-50 degrees, changing leaves and plenty of mums.  I was invited by Kohler Co. to their Wisconsin headquarters for their inaugural Kohler Bloggers Conference, where 21 Design, DIY and Lifestyle Bloggers gathered for 2.5 days.  During my time at Kohler, I experienced several facets of the Kohler “empire” which included  staying at Kohler’s own 5 Star and AAA 5-Diamond rated American Club Resort , spending an afternoon at the Kohler Waters Spa, and fine dining at several of their award winning restaurants.  Oh, and I can’t forget nibbling on  devouring the Kohler chocolates that were left in my room. Comparing Prices: The Cost to Reupholster vs. Buy New

What is the cost to reupholster a sofa?  Do you reupholster what you have or do you buy new ?  We get this question asked a lot when people come into our Pasadena showroom.  Our answer is this: If it is an heirloom piece  and the frame is still in good condition, reupholster.  The same goes if it is an older high- end piece.  If the frame is going to need extensive work or it isn't  high quality to begin with, you might want to buy new. We do a lot of reupholstery but we also have people who decide it is more economical to start from scratch and buy new.

Before making the call, you’ll need to know the cost to reupholster a sofa and the cost to buy new. Here are a few things you’ll also want to consider:

Important Things to Consider

  • Sustainability If you are concerned with the environment and keeping unnecessary waste out of our landfills, reupholstery may be for you.
  • Heirloom Furniture If your piece is sentimental, handed down by a relative, or is of heirloom quality, you may want to reupholster
  • Frame Condition  If the frame is severely damaged and needs extensive work, it may cost more to repair than to buy new.
  • Older, High Quality Brand – They don’t make upholstery like they used to.   If you have an older, high quality piece, chances are it has a 8-way hand tied springs.  If that is the case, you might want to reupholster.

Factors that can affect the cost

There are a few factors that influence the cost to reupholster a sofa, and these factors should be explored before making the decision.

  • The degraded foam, batting, and/or springs may require you to totally replace the seat and back cushions. In other cases, your cushion may just need a refresh.  The reupholster will add as needed and that will be less expensive than totally replacing.
  • The type and cost of upholstery fabric you are using can make a big impact on the total cost if it uses a lot of fabric.
  • If you are using a stripe or large pattern, you will be using more fabric. The patterns have to be matched up at the seams and this may take up considerably more fabric.

Cost Comparison: Reupholster vs. Buying new

Here are some cost comparisons to help you figure out if it is best for you to reupholster or buy new.

It takes approximately 17-22 yards to reupholster a 94” long sofa.  Fabric prices can vary.  On the low end, it’s about $55/yd but average is about $120/yd.  The labor cost is approximately $2300-$4000 depending on if you just need to supplement fill or if you need new cushions).  Taking these numbers into account, it would be  $2150-6640 on average as the cost to reupholster  a sofa. Remember that the fabric that you choose  (and there are a LOT of options) can sway the cost one way or another.

If you were to buy a new sofa, the starting price or COM (customer’s own material) would be about $4700.  So you are getting the sofa, with a basic fabric included at $4700.  Make note that this is for a 8-way hand-tied sofa and not an inferior sinuous spring. If you decided you didn’t want to use the manufacturer’s graded in fabric but you wanted to use your own fabric (COM), the starting price would be $4700  + the cost of fabric (see previous paragraph) It would be 17 yds x $55/yd =$935. So the minimum price of a sofa using your own fabric would be $4700+ $935 = $5635.  If you used a $120/yd fabric, the total would be $4700 + 17($120) = $6740.  There are also options to upgrade cushions.  Fiber wrapped foam is usually standard. An innerspring core seat cushion, memory down seat cushion  or an all feather/down back cushion are upgrades. Using one of these options will add to the price of the sofa.

If you are looking for fabric to reupholster, feel free to see our extensive selection.  We have a variety of price points and fabrics to choose from.  We also carry a wide selection of upholstery manufacturers if you are looking to buy new.  Whichever your case may be, we have the resources and are experience staff is more than happy to help.
